An EMI — Equated Monthly Installment — is the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan over its tenure. Done right, it's a powerful tool. Done carelessly, it becomes a monthly source of stress.
The 40% Rule
Financial advisors widely recommend that your total EMI obligations should not exceed 40% of your monthly take-home income. If you earn ₹40,000 per month, your total EMIs (home, personal, car loans combined) should stay under ₹16,000.
Choosing the Right Tenure
Longer tenure → lower EMI but higher total interest paid. Shorter tenure → higher EMI but you clear the debt faster and pay less overall. Use our EMI Calculator to find the sweet spot for your situation.
Prepayment Strategy
If your income grows mid-loan, consider making partial prepayments. Most lenders allow this after a lock-in period, and it can dramatically reduce your total interest burden.
Emergency Buffer
Before committing to an EMI, ensure you have at least 3 months of EMI value saved as an emergency fund. Job loss or a medical emergency should never put your credit score at risk.
Plan your EMI for the worst month of your year, not the best.
